WHO WE ARE AND WHAT WE DO

Hi! We are Henry and Linda Berkowitz ,
Owners of Endless Mountains Crafts.
We make the one and only
          Wooden Jointed Character Doll.
When people ask us how we got into crafts, we say "almost by accident." Henry has a masters degree in science education and Linda a BA in general studies, but Henry left teaching after 6 years for a "better job" while Linda was a full-time mother of 2 preschoolers in the Philadelphia , Pa. area. When the economic crunch came in the early 1980's, Henry found himself unemployed. "Well," we thought, "if you're unemployed you can be unemployed anywhere." With that in mind, we got out a road map of Pennsylvania, located the area with the fewest roads, and moved there. We tried to find a trditional job for Henry but had little luck.........
One day, while visiting a relative, we saw some marionettes made by a distant cousin. They were rough and crude and only sparsely painted. We liked the way they moved and got an idea to make a more modern, brightly colored doll, one that would either stand or sit by itself. What we had come up with was a way to live and work where we wanted, while traveling to sell our craft. "Would anyone buy them?" we wondered.
There was only one way to find out, and so we began.   There were no patterns to follow and no stencils to buy. We'd never heard of
companies that sell pieces for you to assemble or designs to spray or roll onto a surface-and that was good, because we were forced to come up with a unique kind of doll.
We started out with only 5 figures, because after several weeks of trying to think of characters, that was all we came up with. We made a few of each and thought they were fantastic. The first time we exhibited them was actually at a doll show. We made a few sales, but the valuable part of that experience was being asked by a woman to make a railroad man doll for her husband, who was a railroad enthusiast, and she told us how she wanted it to look .
Sure we told her, even though we didn't know if we could do it. We went home and figured it out. At the next show we now had 6 dolls in the collection and someone
wanted to know why we didn't make a Santa Claus doll because she collected Santas and wanted a Santa from us to add to her collection.
We went home and made it. Over the years we find that our best ideas come from others.
Today our collection is over 250 individual characters. When we look back at those early dolls, we cringe with embarrassment and wonder how we had the nerve to try to sell them, but sell them we did, one at a time, just the way we make them . Initially all we wanted was to be able to earn enough from our craft to be able to live where we wanted and raise our children.
That having been accomplished, we now enjoy watching how our craft continues to evolve into areas we never even thought about when we were just starting.

We travel to craft shows and exhibitions in the spring, summer and fall where you can see us in person or we will ship to you whenever you need a gift for someone special. Just call or e-mail or write to us.
